About the Online Training

These sessions have been designed to explore different themes chosen for their relevance to therapeutic work, from my experience as a CYP* and adult therapist and supervisor. I  aim to create a safe learning environment using a combination of presentation, small and larger group discussion and time for reflection.

All online sessions will be on zoom.                        (*CYP = Children and Young People)

The shorter sessions last to 3 hours, starting at 10, with a short comfort break at an appropriate time.

The 2 day workshop is 12 hours over 2 days and is very intensive.

After the session I will email selected handouts and a certificate of attendance which can be used to  evidence CPD.

The sessions:

1. Ethical and Professional Practice when Working With CYP: Looking at ethical frameworks, capacity and consent, confidentiality, data protection and record keeping, how they relate to work in practice in the context of working with CYP

2. Child Protection, Safeguarding and Risk Assessment: Looking at why it is important to recognise and protect children, understanding what safeguarding is and knowing when and how to react. Also exploring how to assess suicidal risk and self-harm in CYP and knowing when and how to respond.

3. Contracting with CYP: Boundaries are vital for therapeutic safety both for the therapist and the client. We are taught how to contract with adults in training, but how do you contract with different ages and abilities? This workshop explores what to include, and how to contract with CYP to ensure that boundaries are in place to support the therapeutic work.

4. Exploring Beginnings and Endings With CYP: Often CYP clients have experienced many Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that affect their capacity to trust and impact negatively on their lives, behaviour and view of themselves. Also they are likely to have experienced loss in many forms. This workshop looks at managing the beginnings and endings in therapy to achieve a positive therapeutic outcome and enhance the therapeutic alliance.

5. Relationship Building and Working therapeutically with CYP: ACEs impact CYP clients in a many ways. This workshop explores ACEs, and how to build a good therapeutic relationship, using creative skills and core conditions, to improve therapeutic outcome.

6. Inner Critic, Self-Compassion and Resilience: Clients often present with a debilitating critical inner voice that impacts negatively on t heir lives, relationships and capacity for growth. This experiential workshop explores the inner critic, how you can respond using self-compassion and self-acceptance, to decrease the negative impact and improve resilience in the face of adversity.

7. Working Ethically with Risk: As therapists, we often fear working with clients at risk of suicide or self-harm. This workshop explores the themes around suicidality and self-harm, and gives practical support for working safely with this issue to reduce our own fears and potentially greatly improve outcomes.

8. Managing Anxiety: This workshop explores the theory around anxiety and what causes it. We explore how it affects clients and practical ways to manage and support clients struggling with anxiety.

9. Introduction to Counselling Children and Young People: this 2 day workshop provides information on the legal and ethical obligations when working with CYP, looks at safeguarding and working with risk, contracting, assessments, beginnings and endings, relationship building and exploring self-care of the practitioner. It is very intensive  but confidence building and encourages safe and ethical practice when working with this group.
